The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission, with the help of a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is facilitating the Mid-Michigan Program for Greater Sustainability, a renewed plan for the future of Greater Lansing.

Through nine separate but related projects, we are working with more than 40 agencies, local governments, and nonprofit groups to plan, implement, and create a more sustainable community. We are trying out a new approach to planning, called a charrette, for our region’s busiest transportation corridor. Together we are testing and developing a local model for planning that finds ways to cross disciplines as well as involve a wider array of residents, experts and others.

Charrette planning is a community intensive process that invites many people to hands-on planning for a space in their community. This pro-active model breaks with a tradition of “expert” designers and engineers drawing up a diagram for development, and then seeking the public’s reaction. With a charrette approach, experts, engineers and designers work alongside residents, business owners and developers to create a comprehensive design for the area.
