The MMPGS Community Reinvestment Fund awarded a grant to the Friends of the East Lansing Seniors which conducted a housing survey. The survey results are being used by the City to plan for the growing needs of seniors in the community.

Lansing State Journal:  East Lansing is bracing for a large wave of senior citizens projected in coming years.

Among the steps being taken, city officials are considering easing restrictions on senior housing development and are reviewing a recent survey of seniors that could help shape development in the city.

The East Lansing Council is expected to vote Tuesday on a measure to lift the housing restrictions.

“We are trying to position ourselves to address the age wave that is coming,” said Kelly Arndt, director of East Lansing Prime Time, a city-run organization that assists people ages 55 and older. “They call it the ‘Gray Tsumani.’ It’s going to be huge.”

The city now is trying to address housing for seniors because, while several apartment complexes have been developed locally, most have been marketed toward university students and young professionals.
